• Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Summit 2018

  The health and safety of workers is at the heart of everything that HSE does. Tackling work related ill-health like MSDs, which impact on so many people's lives both in and outside of work, is therefore an obvious priority. MSDs are the most commonly reported cause of occupational ill health in GB, affecting many workplaces, arising from different work activities and resulting in a variety of ill-health outcomes. HSE's sights are firmly set on achieving significant improvements in preventing and controlling exposure to MSDs. Everyone has the right to go home healthy from work and we want to enable employers to do the right thing to protect the health of their workers today and for the future. In turn, this will mean a healthier more productive business.

  Sarah Newton MP,
  Minister of State for Disabled People, Health and Work

  Sarah Newton was appointed Minister of State for Disabled People, Health and Work, at the Department for Work and Pensions on 9 November 2017. She was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home Office from 17 July 2016 to 9 November 2017. She was elected Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth in May 2010. Sarah served as Assistant Government Whip from May 2015 until July 2016. Sarah was previously a councillor on Merton Council. During her time in Wimbledon, she served as the head of Friends of Cannizaro Park. Sarah was a marketing officer for IBIS, Citibank and American Express. After working for American Express for 4 years she became Director of Age Concern England. Sarah is also Founder and Initial Director of the International Longevity Centre. Sarah was educated at Falmouth Comprehensive School before reading history at Kings College London. Sarah won a rotary international postgraduate scholarship in the USA.

  

  Professor Karen Walker-Bone

  Karen trained as an academic rheumatologist with a special interest in occupation and musculoskeletal pain in Southampton. Karen is based at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit in Southampton where she is Professor and Honorary Consultant in Occupational Rheumatology and Director of the Arthritis Research UK/MRC Centre for Musculoskeletal Health and Work. She leads the multidisciplinary Centre and coordinates a programme of work to find cost effective ways to reduce the burden of disability for work caused by musculoskeletal disorders. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in 2013.

  

  Geoff Cox

  Geoff Cox works in the Health and Safety Executive's Health and Work Branch where he manages the operational delivery of HSE's Health and Work Programme and co-ordinates its communications, evaluation and commercial aspects.  Geoff joined HSE as 'HM Inspector of Factories' in Birmingham in 1980, and has worked in a wide variety of operational, research, policy and strategy roles in London, Sheffield and Bootle since then.  He has held leading roles for HSE in the manufacturing, quarrying, construction and public service sectors.  Just recently Geoff has had the pleasure of chairing the joint HSE/CIEHF panel that judged the 'MSD risk reduction by design' award, but remains tight lipped about the eventual winner.

  

  Martin Friar

  Martin Friar joined the Health and Safety Executive as Deputy Director (Insight & Service Design) in November 2015. He is responsible for ensuring that HSE's products, services, campaigns, communications, direct and in-direct interventions are developed to meet the need of end-users. His team combines a number of disciplines, including market research, social research and behavioural insights (also known as 'nudge'). His previous roles include the Insolvency Service (where he was Customer and Communications Director), and HM Revenue and Customs, where he led their Behaviour Change and Customer Segmentation Programme.

  

  Stuart Bassford

  Stuart is the Ergonomics lead for Toyota Motor Europe, with the responsibility of identifying gaps and setting the pathways for all Toyota European plants.  With 25 years experience in Toyota thinking ways from shop floor upwards, he has a true understanding of the working difficulties and challenges of a high paced, lean manufacturing company. His inventive approach to the management of MSD's gave rise to turn the possible negatives into business gains. The development of ergonomic evaluation tools for Toyota engineering and design, plus level ups to Toyota's Ergonomic guidelines has triggered a surge of interest in ergonomics and the impact poor design has on employees and therefore business success. Stuart is part of the Motor Industry Ergonomics Group (MIEG) working alongside JLR, AML, BMW Mini, Honda and Fords specialists, sharing ideas and best practices on the elimination of MSD's within the UK motor industry. HSL have also been an essential go to resource when reviewing and developing Toyota's regional/Global Ergonomics standards and for qualitative testing of new technology. Stuart's passion and drive to identify business gaps within Ergonomics and safety has taken the regions image of MSD risk from negative to a pro-active business focus.

  

  Dan Shears

  Dan Shears is the National Health, Safety and Environment Director for the GMB Trade Union. GMB is a general trade union with more than 625,000 members working across the UK economy. In this role he covers industries from the Nuclear Sector to Construction sites, and workplaces from chemical plants to casinos. Dan joined GMB in January 2008, working as National HS&E Officer, with responsibility for policy development, provision of advice, support and guidance to lay members, and for negotiation with employers such as British Gas, National Grid, McVities, G4S and Asda. He was a member of the Review Panel into the Health and Safety Executive's Fee for Intervention Scheme in 2014. In October 2015, Dan was promoted to become Director of GMB's National HS&E Department, where in addition to duties listed above, he is responsible for stakeholder engagement, and the provision of advice to the GMB Senior Management Team. He has been a trade union activist for almost two decades and a Safety Representative since 2000. His particular interests are human factors; gas safety; worker involvement in health and safety management; and the development of drug and alcohol policies.

  

  Darren Collinswood

  Having graduated from Coventry University with a degree in Disaster Management, Darren joined a Freyssinet Group company in the UK to gain some business experience.  It was with Freyssinet Group that Darren found his interest in Health and Safety and worked through the required qualifications to ultimately gain CMIOSH status, completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Health, Safety and Environmental Law at Salford University along the way. In 2004 Darren was appointed Freyssinet UK Health and Safety Manager and guided the company through 14001 and 18001 accreditation.  Working for Freyssinet who are a specialist civil engineering contractor in both post tensioning and structural repair disciplines, Darren has gained experience of managing Health and Safety in large scale civils and building new build and civils and building repair and refurbishment environments including highways, marine and underground structures. Darren now has a Regional role within the Freyssinet Group with a remit that includes North America, South Africa, Benelux, UK and Ireland. Darren has a specific interest in working with the Freyssinet engineering teams on innovative projects to ensure that they are delivered with Health and Safety at the forefront and full consideration is given to all aspects of employee safety and wellbeing.

  

  Maurizio Curtarelli

  Maurizio is a Project Manager in the Prevention and Research Unit at the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work (EU-OSHA), where he is currently managing a multiannual research project in the area of work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders, and is involved in a number of other research activities such as the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER), an extensive survey focusing on safety and health risks management in European workplaces. Maurizio has been working in the socio-economic research domain for more than 15 years, focussing in particular on topics related to labour market, working conditions and quality of work, international development and evaluation of public policies. Prior to joining EU-OSHA he has been working for national and international private and public research organisations, including the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (EUROFOUND), the International Labour Office (ILO) and the European Commission. Maurizio holds a MA in Development Studies from the University of Barcelona, a PhD in Development Economics from the University of Rome III and an MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics from the City University of London.

  

  Louisa Wood

  Louisa is a scientist working in HSE's Human Reliability team. She has worked at HSE since 2015, and spent the first half of this time working in the Pedestrian Safety and Engineering Safety sectors. During her time with HSE, Louisa has worked on incident investigations, literature reviews, onsite assessments and laboratory-based tests. She has an MSc in Ergonomics and Human Factors, and a BSc in Psychology.

  

  Matt Birtles

  Matt is a Principle Ergonomist working in HSL and has been involved in numerous research projects, including the evaluation of welding equipment design for manual handling; development of a manual handling best practice guides in foundries, the rubber and dairy industries; development of improved ergonomics in Rolls-Royce aerospace; design review of train driver operations and layout of rail ticketing offices and improving efficiency and wellbeing in supermarket distribution.  Matt has led the development and delivery of the MSD and ergonomics training course for the HM inspectors and general public for over 12 years, and supported development of the RAPP, MAC and ART tools.  He has over 20 years of experience in the field of ergonomics and design, during which time has worked internationally in Hong Kong, Australia and Israel.  Matthew has particular interest in the prevention of musculoskeletal injury.

  

  Dr Sam Bradbrook

  Sam is a futurist in HSE's Foresight Centre. His role is to monitor developments in science, technology, economics and politics to help identify issues that could significantly affect workplace health and safety in the UK over the next ten years. These outputs contribute to the development of HSE's strategic priorities, policy objectives and programme development. His role has included forming links with a range of colleagues within HSE, wider Government and other organisations to raise awareness of a range of future topics and their likely impact on work. He has written a range of reports on future trends that will affect the future workplace which have been published online.

  

  Zoe Whyatt

  Zoe heads up the European business for dorsaVi, working with clients in elite sports, clinical, research and workplace settings.  dorsaVi have developed world leading wearable sensor technology that measures movement and muscle activity in real time and real situations.  Zoe is currently leading on cross industry projects supported by the HSE and will bring stories of these and other case studies to the Summit to help share how companies across a wide variety of sectors are using wearable technology. Zoe has a background in biotechnology and is passionate about using technology to advance our understanding of human behaviours and movements, and enthusiastic about using objective data to improve decision making.

  

  Professor Anthony D Woolf

  Professor Anthony Woolf is Honorary Professor of Rheumatology, University of Exeter Medical School, and Plymouth Peninsula Medical and Dental College, and Clinical Director of the NHS National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network Southwest Peninsula. He is Chair of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance, UK (ARMA).He is editor-in-chief of Best Practice and Research Clinical Rheumatology. He has long been involved in initiatives to raise awareness of the impact of musculoskeletal conditions and priority for education, prevention, treatment and research at a national, European and global level. He is a founder member and Past Chair of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health. He leads the Bone and Joint Monitor Project, a global health needs assessment that provides the evidence base for action working in partnership with experts and organisations globally. This has included identifying the burden of musculoskeletal conditions through the Global Burden of Disease project and developing strategies for their prevention and control through EU funded projects. He works internationally with WHO and EU and nationally with NHS England, Public Health England and Department of Work and Pensions to ensure musculoskeletal health is in all policies - health, social and employment.In particular he is working with UK policy makers on initiatives to promote healthy active ageing, increase physical activity, improve management of musculoskeletal conditions and to reduce the impact that these conditions have on people's ability to work.  This has included developing the PHE/BITC MSK Toolkit for Employers.

  

  Angela Webster

  Angela Webster is a Chartered Physiotherapist with a MSc from UCL in Neuro-musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. She has lead Musculoskeletal Health and Physiotherapy at Transport for London Occupational Health for 15 years. Research interests during this time have included factors predicting return to work time for back pain, workplace physical activity interventions and management of recurrent MSDs in the workplace.

  

  Anna Barnes

  Anna Barnes has worked as an Economist at HSE for almost ten years. Anna has led on a variety of projects, including several high-profile impact assessments for European Directives. She also managed a major update to HSE's estimate of the costs of workplace fatalities, injuries and cases of ill health and completed a project on estimating the cost of major accidents. Some of her most recent projects include leading on the cost-benefit analysis for HSE post implementation reviews. Prior to joining HSE, Anna worked as a chartered accountant in the private sector.

  

  Kerry Trow

  Kerry Trow was born in the Rhondda and initially worked in the NHS as a Registered Nurse in acute settings before changing direction to train as a public health nurse specialising in occupational health. Delivering occupational healthcare in a range of settings, he subsequently developed broad experience of health and safety management of musculo-skeletal disorders. He joined the Health and Safety Executive as an Occupational Health Inspector in 1998. He is currently a Principal Inspector managing a team of Occupational Health Inspectors which covers Scotland and the North of England. Occupational Health Inspectors are qualified occupational health nurses whose work includes delivering and supporting inspection, investigation and enforcement activity. As an inspector, Kerry has extensive experience of investigating reported upper limb disorders and inspecting health and safety management arrangements focussing on health risks in a wide range of sectors. Most recently he has conducted and managed inspection activity focussed on musculo-skeletal risks in the NHS and motor vehicle manufacturing.

  

  Terry Woolmer

  Terry joined EEF in September 2011 to head policy work on occupational safety and health, health and well-being. He represents manufacturers' views and concerns to UK and European Union politicians and officials. He is a member of the EU-OSHA governing board and the European Commission's Advisory Committee on Safety and Health (ACSH) as well as two ACSH working parties looking at EU member state enforcement of EU OSH legislation and Biological agents. He has previously sat on two ACSH working groups covering work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) and Electromagnetic Fields (EMF). Terry is Chair of CEEMET's (Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-Based Industries) Health and Safety Committee and a Council member (trustee) of the UK Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).

  Terry has been an EH&S professional for over 35 years. Previously he was Executive Director responsible for Health and Safety Risk Management with Goldman Sachs, Environment, Health and Safety Manager with GlaxoSmithKline Research and Development and a GB Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector.

  

  Ed Milnes

  Ed is a chartered member of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors. His background is BSc(Hons) Psychology and MSc(Eng) Work Design and Ergonomics. He worked for over 15 years as an Ergonomics and Human Factors specialist for the Health and Safety Executive. For the 9 years prior to becoming an independent consultant in 2015, Ed's role was a Specialist HM Inspector in Ergonomics and Human Factors. Since 2015 as an independent consultant, Ed has continued working with a broad range of employers and industries, to identify ergonomics and human factors issues and advise companies on ways to reduce risks to worker health and wellbeing. In response to increasing calls for guidance and support by industry, a significant part of Ed's work has been focused on the emerging musculoskeletal aspects of mobile working and the use of mobile devices for work activities. In partnership with Sarah Tapley (also an ex-HSE Ergonomist), Ed has set up Mobile Office (www.mobileoffice.guru) which is an ergonomics consultancy dedicated to providing help to employers who are looking to manage mobile working issues.

  

  Peter Kinselley

  Peter has over 20 years experience of successfully implementing health and safety management systems within large corporate organisations. He has worked internationally, on multi-site operations, within food manufacturing, professional services, banking, government and charity industries. Peter has extensive experience in developing Health and Wellbeing Programs and has detailed knowledge and experience of leading, working and influencing teams within a multi-disciplined environment. He has developed and implemented behavioral safety, competency based training and wellbeing programs in a range of international organisations.  He has extensive knowledge of fleet safety, emergency and business continuity planning. Peter is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), is a former Chair of the IOSH Chiltern Branch and an accredited Mentor.

  

  Jo Buchan

  Jo Buchan joined Arthritis Research UK in January 2016 as a Development Programme Manager to lead on large cross-organisational programmes for the charity. She currently manages the charity's 'Flex' programme which aims to develop Arthritis Research UK's spaces and ways of working to enable collaborative, inclusive and flexible working whilst supporting employee health and wellbeing, particularly MSK (musculoskeletal) health. Over the past nine years Jo has worked and volunteered for a number of not-for-profits including St John Ambulance, Oxfam UK and Alzheimer's Society.

  Q. What sessions are being recorded and streamed?
  We're live streaming every session in the main lecture theatre and recording keynote presentations in 1 other room. Keynote lectures captured and available to watch online, at anytime.

  Q. How long will video recordings be made available for?
  Videos will be made available for viewing all year round. Our aim is to inspire and educate as many viewers as possible.

  Q. When will recorded sessions be made available?
  We have dedicated video editors on-site, who will be busy editing and uploading presentations as soon as each session ends. All videos will be ready within 6-12 hours of the conference ending.

  Q. Due to timezone differences/work commitments I won't be able to watch live. Is there a catch-up service?
  Yes - as soon as each session is finished the edit process begins. Videos will be made available within 12hrs of each session ending (the quicker the better). You will receive email updates when new content is added to the video on-demand archive.

  Q. Do you have an example of the video recordings?
  Yes - we're working with our live streaming partner Switch New Media. They are experts in recording and live streaming conferences all over the UK/Europe.

  Q. Is it possible to test the live stream in advance of conference
  Yes - we'll be running a test stream from the venue 24hrs before the event starts - you'll be invited to join the stream. We also go live 1hr before each session starts on Wednesday 21st March. Our dedicated support team will also be available via support@switchenwmedia.com if you have any technical queries.

  Q. Why is VAT being added?
  To comply with the tax regulations of the European Union (“EU”), Eventbrite is required to collect and remit Value-Added Tax (“VAT”) from EU organisers to the EU tax authority. For EU residents who did not provide us with a VAT registration ID, Eventbrite is required to charge VAT at the rate applicable in the EU member state in which the Organiser is resident. If you have entered a valid EU VAT registration ID to Eventbrite into our system, Eventbrite will not charge EU VAT on the Eventbrite Service Fee.

MSDsummit.org is an entirely independent educational platform without ties to commercial partners beyond the open sponsorship of this event. We aim to film and record all keynote presentations at conference, and by purchasing a subscription to the online video archive you are helping us to film and capture the exceptional content of these lectures.
